Fairies in the Forest

Enter a magical, hidden world in the Forest, where creatures of the imagination live. Bring your children on an enchanted hike in search of forest fairies living among the wildflowers and trees. Along the way, your child may use their creativity to make a fairy house of natural materials. We will end at our Nature Explore Classroom and enjoy s’mores at the campfire! Program meets in the Horine Reservation’s Environmental Education Center. Ages: 5 - 12. A parent/legal guardian must accompany anyone under the age of 18. Little Learners: Beaver Adventure

Celebrate International Beaver Day at Jefferson Memorial Forest! Wood-n’t you like to bring your little learner to a gnaw-some morning of beaver fun? Listen to the tale of the 1948 Beaver Drop during storytime, and then enjoy some stellar STEAM activities inspired by everybody’s favorite ecosystem engineer. Beaver or be square! TreeFest

TreeFest is Louisville's annual Arbor Day celebration that showcases the importance of trees and the roles they play in our lives through creative, informative, and fun-filled activities and events for people of all ages. This year we will engage volunteers to plant and mulch trees in Petersburg Park, as well as offer family- friendly activities such as tree climbing, eco-friendly vendor booths, a tree giveaway, and the opportunity to learn from different “green” organizations in our city. Live music, food and drinks are also available, making for an ideal afternoon to sit in a park and take in the scenery. Adaptation Station

Join us for a fun-filled afternoon of learning about animal adaptations! In this hands-on program, kids will explore adaptations through games and activities that highlight how animals survive and thrive in their environments. After, kids will create their own adaptation craft to take home. It’s a wild, hands-on adventure you won’t want to miss!

Gnomes and Trolls

Enter a magical, hidden world in the Forest, where creatures of the imagination live. Be on the look-out for our Forest Troll, guarding a bridge along the trail. Perhaps he will let us pass if we offer him many of the edible foods in the Forest. While in the woods, we will build shelters of sticks and leaves and enjoy a woodland treat around a campfire. A magical potion awaits you in the Nature Explore Classroom. Program meets in the Horine Reservation’s Environmental Education Center. Ages: 5-12. Owl Prowl

Will owls respond if they’re called? Whooooo knows! Join Natural Areas staff for an owl prowl that will begin indoors with a presentation about these amazing nocturnal predators, their habitats, and behaviors. The evening continues with a hike along well-traveled paths as we call out for these elusive birds. Test your auditory skills by listening for their responses. Dress for the weather. Program meets at JMF. A more precise location will be sent by email prior to the program. Ages 10 and up. A parent/ legal guardian must accompany anyone under the age of 18. Birding at Shawnee Park with Raptor Rehab-Birds of Prey Family Day

Go out on a limb, spread your wings and let learning take flight! Join us for a presentation led by Raptor Rehabilitation of Kentuckiana with live birds of prey such as hawks, vultures, and falcons. Afterward, we will practice birding with binoculars. Our path will be fairly flat on paved sidewalk surfaces and will be around one mile total. Hopefully, we can spot some raptors in the wild! Some binoculars will be available to use. Program meets at Shawnee Park. More details will be provided once registered. For all ages. Pre-Registration required. Seasonal Rhythm Retreats

Join us for a series of seasonal-focused mini-retreats. These programs provide the space, tools, and guidance for finding sanctuary in the rhythms of nature. Activities will include beginner-friendly yoga, guided meditations, journaling, silent reflection in nature, and simple crafts with natural materials.
